Newsletter - September 2016

Dear colleague,

With more than 130 million people around the world in need of humanitarian assistance, the work of aid workers is more important than ever. As the global community honoured the World Humanitarian Day on 19 August, the Aid International Development Forum (AIDF) highlights the importance of innovation, knowledge exchange and cross-sector collaboration to save lives and deliver better assistance for people in need. This newsletter draws attention to a number of sustainable solutions aimed to tackle access to energy, education and the digital world, especially for those in the most isolated locations.

With recent unprecedented rainfall in the U.S. State of Louisiana leading to devastating flooding, the region now faces significant challenges: how to handle resulting disease, how to pay for the damage and crucially how to prevent it from happening again. More than 86,500 people have already registered for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Hear from Elizabeth A. Zimmerman, Associate Administrator, Office of Response & Recovery, FEMA and discuss the most pertinent questions around emergency response and resilience at the upcoming AIDF Global Disaster Relief Summit next week.

With technological innovations advancing rapidly, humanitarian and development actors are looking for best ways to utilise digital platforms for improving disaster response and progress toward achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Senior technology and data professionals are invited to join Mobile for Development Master-Class on 3rd November in London, a one day event filled with keynote speeches, panel discussions, case studies, ‘ask the experts’ Q&A and interactive sessions on how to get the most out of mobile technology to drive innovation, funding and better support the SDGs in the UK and globally.

With best regards,
AIDF Team

World Panel to Address Energy Poverty at Global Disaster Relief Summit 2016
Access to energy is categorized by the UN as nothing less than a basic human right. In a wired and connected global society, having access to power – particularly mobile power – is as important as food and shelter. Four billion people worldwide currently have limited access to electricity or none at all. This is a global crisis. World Panel founder and CEO John A. Anderson learned about the importance of mobile energy first-hand on a trip to Uganda in 2011.
