Newsletter - December 2016
Dear colleague,
The world’s population is estimated to reach 9 billion by 2050; subsequently the number of people at risk of hunger is likely to increase from 881 million in 2005 to more than one billion. This newsletter looks at whether hunger can be ended in 14 years, to achieve the second Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of Zero Hunger by 2030.
Significant progress has also been made towards the third SDG Goal of Good Health and Well-being. The World Health Organization (WHO) has secured funding for the initial phase deployment of the world’s first malaria vaccine. RTS,S is the first approved vaccine combating the devastating mosquito-borne disease, helping to achieve the goal of providing access to effective, quality and affordable medicines and vaccines for all.
Hear about the latest innovations and best practice supporting the SDGs at the 2nd annual Aid & Development Africa Summit in Nairobi. Discuss with 300+ leading humanitarian and development experts how to improve aid delivery and development strategy in sub-Saharan East Africa.
You’re also invited to join the 5th GEOSS Science and Technology Stakeholder Workshop 'Linking the SDGs to Earth Observation, Models and Capacity Building' on 9-10 December at the University of California, Berkeley, CA, USA.
With best regards,
AIDF Team

Myanmar’s financial sector is undergoing a significant transition. Since 2012, it has witnessed a number of reforms including, the expansion of private banks, the installation of thousands of ATM machines, the steady growth of private sector credit (albeit from a low foundation) and the issue of more than 1.4 million debit cards.

Sustainable Development Goals one year on: Zero Hunger by 2030?
One year on from the adoption of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Aid and International Development Forum (AIDF) looks at Goal number 2: Zero Hunger. This ambitious goal aims to ‘end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030’. Can we really end world hunger in 14 years? It is worth taking stock of what has already been achieved. By 2015, Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 1c (to halve the percentage of hungry people) had almost been reached. Indeed, 72 of 129 countries monitored successfully reached the goal. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that two billion people have been freed from a likely state of hunger since 1990-92.

World’s first malaria vaccine to be piloted in sub-Saharan Africa in 2018
The World Health Organization (WHO) has secured funding for the initial phase deployment of the world’s first malaria vaccine. The WHO has announced that the vaccine will piloted in sub-Saharan Africa with immunisation campaigns beginning in 2018. Malaria infects around 200 million people a year worldwide and killed an estimated 440,000 in 2015. The majority of malaria deaths are among children in sub-Saharan Africa. The vaccine, known as RTS,S or Mosquirix and developed by GlaxoSmithKline, acts against P. falciparum, the most deadly malaria parasite. Whilst clinical trials have shown RTS,S only provides partial protection against malaria once the four-dose schedule has been completed; it is the first approved vaccine combating the devastating mosquito-borne disease.
