Newsletter - August 2016
Dear colleague,
This newsletter looks at the global phenomenon of ‘start-up’ business model, highlighting a few small companies making the headlines for their contributions to disaster relief around the world. Particular attention is given to drones and their innovative application in disaster response scenarios, as well as solar-powered lighting, which offers reliable, efficient and portable illumination solution for people affected by disasters.
While the Zika epidemic is not new to the global community, it has caused recent headlines with new outbreaks in the US, while there is still no known treatment for the virus. The current outbreak is expected to last three years and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has just announced nearly $60m funding for Zika preparedness and response. Aid & International Development Forum is delighted to announce that CDC Director Dr Tom Frieden will deliver a keynote address at the upcoming Global Disaster Relief Summit 2016 in Washington D.C.
Lastly, you’re invited to take a look at the summary of the 2nd annual Aid & Development Asia Summit 2016, which took place in June in Bangkok, Thailand. The Summit gathered 290+ local, regional and global humanitarian and development professionals from NGOs, UN agencies, donors, governments and the private sector sharing knowledge, discovering success stories and fostering innovation & partnerships to assist the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in South-East Asia.
With best regards,
AIDF Team

Drone Technology Revolutionising Disaster Relief
Drones or UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) are increasingly coming to the forefront of humanitarian technology innovation. While drones are not new to headlines, their application in disaster relief situations is still in the embryonic stage, with exciting developments coming thick and fast.
Innovators want to use drones to deliver vital emergency supplies to areas with no road access, as well as to operate in disaster areas where access for rescuers is fraught with danger.

The 2015-16 Zika epidemic has seen the virus spread throughout South America and into Central and North America. The Role of Reliable Solar-powered Lighting in Modern Day Disaster Relief Efforts
What would you classify as basic human needs? Food, water and shelter. At least, that’s what Maslow tells us. But what if we were to change the context? Would these three still be the basic needs?
