Newsletter - May 2017

Dear colleague,

This month’s newsletter brings attention to the role of healthcare and immunisation in sustainable development. While World Health Day (7 April) highlighted the importance of ensuring health and well-being for everyone, at every stage of life, the World Immunisation Week (24-30 April) raised awareness about the importance of vaccines in protecting people against disease and the role of immunisation in achieving the 2030 Agenda.

Despite significant progress made over the last decade to meet health related targets, 1 in 19 children in Southeast Asia die before their fifth birthday, which represents the highest child mortality rate in the world. Global and regional agencies are looking for innovative ways to improve available health systems and ensure universal health care access.

The Aid and International Development Forum has released a guide to innovative ‘Solutions That Save Lives & Support Development’. The 3rd annual edition highlights cutting-edge technologies and products that have transformed the way humanitarians addresses current and emerging challenges. With over 300 solutions nominated, the guide includes a section dedicated to healthcare and medical equipment. View the 2017 guide

In light of the upcoming Aid and Development Asia Summit, the AIDF has released two infographics. The first infographic explores agriculture and food security in Southeast Asia, whilst the second looks into donor funding and financing of humanitarian needs in Myanmar. Both infographics point out two key priorities that failed to be fully financed - health and education. Multi-sectoral interventions are required to strengthen health service access and delivery, whilst promoting livelihoods and reducing poverty.

With best regards,
AIDF Team

Importance of Cold Chains & Holistic Total Cost of Ownership

An unbroken and functioning cold chain is critical to ensuring that vaccines remain unspoilt and effective when administered to children. Equipment failure, even for a short time, can render entire batches of vaccines ineffective and result in children dying. This is particularly critical in remote health centres with no power supply, where replacing vaccines can take days or even weeks if the storage equipment fails. 150 million vaccines are lost annually because of this...
