Inter-Agency Working Group on Disaster Preparedness for East and Central Africa (IAWG)

The IAWG is a leading regional forum for networking, technical information sharing and coordination. The IAWG is based in Nairobi with a regional focus on the wider East Africa Region (East, Central and Horn of Africa). The IAWG provides a forum for regional organisations NGOs, the Red Cross and UN Agencies - to enhance information exchange and regional coordination in order to respond to emergencies in a timely and cost efficient manner. Our work is done through various sub working groups.

    What we do

    The IAWG provides a forum for regional organisations NGOs, the Red Cross and UN Agencies - to enhance information exchange and regional coordination in order to respond to emergencies in a timely and cost efficient manner. Our work is done through the various sub working groups which include;

    • Humanitarian human resources (HR)
    • Training and capacity building (TCBG)
    • Disaster risk reduction and climate change (DRR & CC)
    • Policy and advocacy,
    • quality and accountability (Q&A)
    • HIV mainstreaming &
    • Information communications technology (ICT)

    The food security and nutrition (FSNWG) and the cash learning partnership (CaLP) are thematic groups that have independent secretariat but are affiliated to the IAWG. The Security and Logistics sub-groups meets whenever there is a demand but continues to hold informal interactions.
